Feta Batu

All carving process and life activities use stones as the main material during megalithic period in Nias Selatan,. Thus, stone carving becomes part of ancient Nias Selatan tribe’s tradition. The sculpting process did not only produce the shape of carvings, but also the forms of sound. Especially for type of rocks that can produce a pitched sound. Look at the artifacts of round stones where women used to dance, knock, and hear their unique sound variants.

Thus, the Nias Selatan ancient people way of life, cannot be separated from producing elements of distinctive sounds processing. The way of life becomes the foundation for the birth of Feta Batu music arts; the blending stone sound and musical instruments of tradition and modern chime, a blend of civilization tones.

Since 2003, the late Hikayat Manao, looking for some kind of megalithic stone that can produce different sounds, then he arranged the tones into music. He called it feta batu, sound of stone. After that he established Baluseda Group. He was the leader. Under this group, feta batu was improved. Baluseda group has performed feta batu music in several important occasions. Now, the effort of the late Hikayat Manao is being continued by his family; Gibson Manao Rail.

The songs that are played during feta batu performance come from hereditary songs. Hear the nenu-nenu song (sifabolosi), the lyrics contains a life philosophy, prayer to the God, asking for His blessing. The people of Nias are believers.

Hear fahasara dodo; “Aoha noro nilului wahea, aoha noro nilului waoso”, the burden will be so light when borne together. The lyrics are a picture of the accustomed and civilized people of Nias. The lyrics are an education. The Nias people love to work together; building houses, cleaning the environment, opening the fields. The people of Nias live in togetherness. The lyrics contains of life wisdom. All of ancient life wisdom recorded in Feta Batu.
