Nias Selatan is the land of natural beauty, a district in North Sumatra Province. Consist of 104 islands with 4 large islands, side by side with the island of Sumatra. Some of the island, has not been inhabited yet. Teluk Dalam is the capital city.
The story of pre-historical civilization lies down here. It is about 3000 to 5000 years ago, before BC. The origin of the Nias Tribe (Ono Niha) is still a mystery. Common opinion, stating that, the ancestors of this tribe is a sailor. Entering and built the first life in Gomo Village, then spread almost throughout Nias Island.
Nias Selatan, is rich of the uniqueness of culture and tradition; language, customary law, art, ancient architecture, sports, rituals and celebrations such as; harvest season celebrations, wedding celebrations, title and other celebrations. Menhirs, high-altitude stones, ancient historical artifacts, are also clear evidence of past civilization, now mingling with modern civilization and stunning natural beauty. Many historical stories live in them.
The other fascinating culture of Nias Selatan is; the uniqueness of traditional dances and the tradition of stone jump. This dance is called Baluse and Moyo. In ancient times, Baluse dance was used to train the younger generation on the art of war, it was intended to form the younger generation of South Nias at that time, in order to become powerful and strong warriors in order to defeat the enemies that exist.
Now, this dance is prserved as a part of the wealth of cultural heritage. Usually, this dance will be held to welcome guests who come in addition to held at traditional ceremonies. Baluse dance is danced by the men, while for women, the traditional dance is Moyo dance. Moyo dance is a symbol of the spirit and agility of women in South Nias to achieve the ideals. This dance will be held at the reception ceremony.
The stone jump ritual is a ritual to train the art of war in the younger generation of South Nias. In ancient times, every soldier must be able to jump over the enemy’s fence. Therefore this stone jump ritual becomes so important and sacred, in order to jump the soldiers and the higher. In those days, every young man in Nias Selatan should be able to jump over a 2.5-meter-high stone to be declared to have grown up.
